Social History

Clegg & Kemp Py Ld, jam manufacturers.

High costs hit consumer goods
Increasing costs of primary raw materials were having a detrimental effect on consumption of goods associated with R. Lohn and Co. Ltd, merchants, importers, the chairman (Mr. H. F. Soding) told shareholders at the annual meeting yesterday. Remission of sales tax on all food products, he said, would help the industry.
To offset the increase in costs and the keen competition in the Jam and allied trades, plant lay-out of the subsidiary, Clegg and Kemp
Pty Ltd., had been re-arranged.
J. S. Corden and Co., another subsidiary, would transfer its engineering shop to bigger premises in West Melbourne. This would permit development of new and improved machinery for the meat and bakery trades.

R. Lohn & Co. Ltd., bakers’ suppliers, established in 1898, manufactures ornamental confectionery and supplies for bakers,
pastry-cooks and cafes. The Jam manufacturing business of Clegg & Kemp Pty. Ltd., West Melbourne, was taken over in 1943.
In 1948 the company bought the trading section of J. S. Corden & Co., — suppliers of bakers’ and butchers’ requisites.
