1893 The Argus.

THE TRAMWAY ACCIDENT ON THE ST. KILDA ROAD.
Mr. William Himen, of Chetwynd-street, North Melbourne, who was shockingly injured in a tramway accident on the St. Kilda road on Sunday, is doing better than his medical attendants expected. When first admitted to the Alfred Hospital, he was suffering so severely from shock that it was feared his death would not be long delayed. The amputation of his left leg, which was performed by Mr. O’Hara and several of the surgeons of the hospital, was, however, so successfully accomplished that the patient’s condition improved subsequently, and though still critical is scarcely hopeless.

Streetscape

Chetwynd Street was once predominantly a residential street with single and two storey Victorian terrace dwellings, two churches, a school and two hotels known as the Queens Arms and the Star of Hotham.

The Chetwynd streetscape today is characterised by a mix of multi-storey blocks of public flats, some modern commercial/industrial buildings, an ambulance depot, and a school.

In 2021, only fifty of the original one hundred and twenty-nine Victorian heritage dwellings once found on this street remain, compared to the 1895 Melbourne Metropolitan Board of Works map.
