Social History

BAKERS’ STRIKE – A RUMOR DENIED.   5/10/1907
I desire to contradict rumors that are in circulation that I declined to pay the men in my employ the L2 14s per week demanded by them.
On Sunday night, 22nd September, I went into the bake-house, and told my foreman that I would pay the men L2 14s per week. He said that he could not accept it, in consequence of a resolution carried by the Trades Hall on the Saturday night, and gave me a week’s notice.
On Saturday night, September 28th. the resolution carried on September 21st was rescinded, and a motion to go and get the L3 14s where they could was carried.
Every men in the Trades Halt knows that during the 16 years I have been manufacturing bread, I have never employed any but union men.
SAMUEL DOYLE. Baker.
