Social History

1918 The Age.

Railway Accidents.
A Porter Injured.
As the result of an accident at the Spencer-street railway station yesterday, James Hawksworth, 47, porter, residing at 112 Chetwynd-street, North Melbourne, was seriously injured. He was on duty at the island platform, and at 6.50 a.m. had occasion to cross the line just after the arrival of the St. Albans train. The engine was then being shunted from one end of the train to the other, and he failed to notice it, with the result that he was knocked down and one of the wheels passed over his left arm, cutting it off near the elbow. His head was also injured. After he was taken to the Melbourne Hospital in an ambulance it was found necessary to amputate portion of the limb, and the patient suffered severely from shock.

Streetscape

Chetwynd Street was once predominantly a residential street with single and two storey Victorian terrace dwellings, two churches, a school and two hotels known as the Queens Arms and the Star of Hotham.

The Chetwynd streetscape today is characterised by a mix of multi-storey blocks of public flats, some modern commercial/industrial buildings, an ambulance depot, and a school.

In 2021, only fifty of the original one hundred and twenty-nine Victorian heritage dwellings once found on this street remain, compared to the 1895 Melbourne Metropolitan Board of Works map.
