Social History
It’s a common belief, part of Rupert Murdock’s ascent, that he turned one worn-out old Adelaide newspaper into empire known today as News Limited, but that’s not entirely accurate. Rupert inherited a majority stake in News Limited, which was the publisher of the Barrier Miner (in Broken Hill), the Sunday Mail (in Adelaide), and the News (in Adelaide). Additionally, it owned a good portion of Southdown-Press, of Stanley then later a Walsh Street, West Melbourne based business that published the national women’s magazine New Idea.
