Social History

1906 The Age

“THAT’S HOT!”
A SURPRISED DEFENDANT.
At South Melbourne court yesterday Myles
Scatchard, of 227 Dryburgh street, North Melbourne, was proceeded against by A. Nathan, trading as “Tyson’s,” a local time payment Arm, for tbe recovery of 10/2, balance due on goods sold and delivered— principally dress material. “I Know nothing about it,” asseverated defendant.
“I wan quite surprised when I got the summons.”
Mr. Rogers (producing receipts for the delivery of the goods); Are these your signatures?
Defendant: No.
Mr. Rogers: Or your wife’s?
Defendant: I don’t recognise them as such.
Mr. Nathan produced his books to prove the transaction.
Defendant: What name did she get these goods under?
Mr. Nathan: Myles Scatchard.
Defendant: Then what did you send me letter in the name of O’Brien for? (Laughter.)
Mr. Rogers: Have you got the letters sent to you in the name of O’Brien?
Defendant: I reckoned they had nothing to do with me, so I sent them back.
Mr. Gross, J.P.: The transaction is quite clear.
Defendant: Well, I never saw the goods, and I don’t know where the man’s place is.
Tho Chairman (Mr. Hartnell, J.P): Order for the amount claimed, 10/2, with 15/ costs.
Defendant (aghast) How much costs?
Sergeant Liddle: 15/ costs.
Defendant: What! 15/ costs!  Fif-teen shil-ings.
Blime, that’s hot! (Laughter.)
