Robert arrived in Australia before his marriage to Jane Spencer Black in Victoria in 1858.
Jane gave birth to Frank in 1862, Alfred in 1864, then Ellen in 1866 at 472 Latrobe Street, West Melbourne and finally Mabel in 1869.
Robert had engineering skills and while in Melbourne he entered a partnership with Thomas Shaw in the firm known as Fulton & Shaw in 1866, their firm was located on Flinders Street between King and Spencer Street in the City.
