1887 The Argus.

CRUSHED TO DEATH.
An accident occurred at the works in connection with the erection of the new Prince’s bridge, on the 27th of January to a workman, named Thos. Ramsbottom, 30 years of age, which resulted fatally on Wednesday last at the Alfred Hospital, whither the injured man
was conveyed Dr Youl, the city coroner, held an inquest on the remains yesterday at the hospital. Joseph Ramsbottom, a carpenter, residing at Hotham, a brother of the deceased, described the accident. He said that six men were engaged about a large suspended tank or waggon ” The deceased, was beneath the waggon, and, not noticing this, the order was given for lowering the tank gently. This was done, and Ramsbottom was crushed beneath it The deceased was a married man with one child.
The verdict of the jury, in accordance with the medical testimony, was that death resulted from injuries to the spine, which were accidentally caused.

Streetscape

Chetwynd Street was once predominantly a residential street with single and two storey Victorian terrace dwellings, two churches, a school and two hotels known as the Queens Arms and the Star of Hotham.

The Chetwynd streetscape today is characterised by a mix of multi-storey blocks of public flats, some modern commercial/industrial buildings, an ambulance depot, and a school.

In 2021, only fifty of the original one hundred and twenty-nine Victorian heritage dwellings once found on this street remain, compared to the 1895 Melbourne Metropolitan Board of Works map.
