Social History
MUSICAL SCHOLARSHIPS.
Clarke Winner.
The Clarke Scholarship for 1925 has been awarded to Mr. Roy Shepherd, of Carroll street, North Melbourne. Although aged
only 17 years Mr. Shepherd is a pianist of promise, and has obtained the L.A.B. and L.T.C.L. degrees of the London College
of Music. In addition to these honours he obtained highest marks in grade 1 at the recent examinations held at the University Conservatorium of Music, won the open championship piano solo at the South Street competitions, and for three years in succession was the winner of the piano solo championship at the A.N.A. competition’s. He is a pupil of Mr.
F. Homewood at the University Conservatorium and a scholarship holders at the Albert street Conservatorium.
He commenced his musical education as a choirboy at St. Paul’s Cathedral, and later attended Scotch College. Musicians and other competent judges consider that Mr Shepherd promises to become a pianist of no mean ability.
Young Melbourne Student’s Success. One of the most important scholarships awarded in music in Australia has Won won Mr. W. H. Shepherd, a student at the Melbourne University Conservatorium of Music, The award is the South Province Scholarship of the London Royal College of Music.
The examination was held yesterday at the University, and the examiners (Professor W. A. Laver, professor at the University
Conservatorium ; Mr. F. Hart, director of the Albert Street Conservatorium; and Dr. A. E. Floyd), after having awarded
the scholarship, particularly commended Miss Elinor Clapham and Mr. P. B. Cohen, and also said that the standard reached
by the majority of the candidates was higher than usual.
Mr. Shepherd, who is aged only 17 years, was educated privately, and then went to the Albert Street Conservatorium, to which he had won a scholarship, but after the death of his teacher he went to the University Conservatorium, where he has been for the last year. He has won several championships at the South Street competitions at Ballarat, and at the ‘Australian Natives’ Association competitions. He was recently made a licentiate of the Associated Board, which controls the scholarship he has just won, and this should
prove very useful to him in England, where he will go as soon as possible, and where he will remain for three years, the tenure of the scholarship.
