Social History
William J. Collins, railway ganger, of 602 Latrobe-street, and employed at the Spencer-street railway station, recollected, on the 9th inst., going with Plain-clothes Constable Gleeson to a foundry (Clark’s) in Footscray, where he saw some railway metal, including
one new “chair,” and others. He thought there would be about 10 cwts. They had been broken in two, like those produced, and seemed to have been recently broken up with a hammer. They had the Government mark on them, “V.R.” He did not know of any firm making these things, or that any such articles were sold to the public.
