Social History

The Oxford Hotel [3] 1872-1904, deprived (of its licence) and used for commercial purposes.

Graded B (of regional or metropolitan significance) in the Melbourne City Council ‘s North and West Melbourne Conservation Study 1983.

The site and building

Despite its appearance as part of a substantial building the hotel on this site must have been small as No 113 and No 115 were both shops in 1873. Notice that the middle window on the first floor facing Errol Street has an attractive arched pediment. Around the corner in Glass Street you can still see the opening of the cellar door through which beer was unloaded.
