William Sturgess was born around 1829 in Cheshire, England, his father, William, was 31 and his mother, Mary, was 32. Wife Fanny Watson was born in 1829 in Manchester, Lancashire. William Sturgess married Fanny Watson in 1853 at St John’s, Deansgate, Lancashire England. His occupation on the certificate stated he was a bricklayer. William 23 years and Fanny Sturgess, 22 years of age, arrived in Port Phillip in 1853 onboard the ship Thames departing from Liverpool England. Fanny and William had 9 children. The Sturgess family resided in the North and West Melbourne area at 9 Cobden Street Hotham, 20 Milton Street West Melbourne (both homes gone) and finally at 1 Miller Street West Melbourne at the time of William’s passing in 1891. Fanny Sturgess nee Watson sadly passed at the age of 47, during a holiday voyage back to England in 1875, she was buried at sea. Reid, Stewart & Duguid
A partnership formed by Mr. James Reid, Mr. John Stewart & Mr. Alexander Duguid of West Melbourne. The three-way partnership was instrumental in crafting a number of high quality buildings in Melbourne between the late 1850’s to the mid 1870’s, up until the partnership was dissolved. Duguid, a Master Mason and native of Aberdeenshire Scotland, arrived in Melbourne onboard the vessel ‘Black Eagle‘ with his wife Helen and daughter Sarah Bell Duguid. Helen and Alexander had one other child George Alexander Duguid born in Melbourne in 1855. Alexander Duguid, a son of George and Anne Duguid nee Phillips, was the third member of the Melbourne partnership and he lived with his family in Miller Street, West Melbourne until his death at the age of 58 years in 1882, the same year his wife Helen also died. Helen Duguid was the daughter of John Walker and Sarah Bell of Scotland. The trio who had their operations based on the corner of Abbotsford & Elm streets in North Melbourne until 1872, and had a very successful partnership during their lifetime in Melbourne. Over, Joseph (1829-1913)
Mr Joseph Over was a native of Brighton England. It was at the age of only 23 years that he and his brother Charles Over left England in search of future fortunes on the Victorian gold fields. The brothers arrived onboard the vessel ‘New Orleans’ to Melbourne in 1852 from England. It was sometime between 1852 and 1873 that Joseph met Agnes Petrie and they had 3 children together, being Joseph jnr, Agnes and Jane. Records in the Melbourne Council rate books from 1872 until 1882 show Joseph Over living at 24 Abbotsford Street West Melbourne then they lived at 63 Ireland Street West Melbourne, and later prior to his death he lived in Woodland Street North Fitzroy. Augustus Oliver operated under the business name of Oliver Brothers builders, located at 77 Queen’s Bridge street South Melbourne in 1915. A Peculiar Law Suit.“During the hearing of a case in the First Civil Court yesterday allegations were made that in connection with the tenders for the purchase of the old shipping buildings at the Spencer street railway station.“ “Christian James Clement Oliver and his brother Augustus Dundee Oliver, appeared before Mr. Knight, J.P. at the Third City Court on charges of having falsely sworn an affidavit in April 10th 1923. In dismissing the case, Mr. Knight said that he did not think that there was sufficient evidence upon which to convict the Olivers.” – The Argus News, 17th May 1923, page 11. Lochhead, John (1820-1891)
Mr. John Lochhead (Lockhead or Lockheard) born 1820, met his wife Agnes Walker and married at the age of 23 years in Glasgow in 1843. They chose to emigrate to Melbourne sometime during the “Gold Rush” According to the Melbourne Leader news, 14th July 1877 page 21, John Lockhead, had erected some houses in Adderley street West Melbourne claimed to have been damaged by a steam hammer operating at the Glasgow Iron Works in Ireland Street West Melbourne on the site where J Gadsden P/L later operated.
